Roman Britain
An excavation project in the 20th century brought to ground various pottery kilns that hint at a Roman settlement. As the 13th century approached, Farnham village grew into a busy town. The roads from Eastern England to the Southwest and the road from London to Southampton crossed in the town. Because of this, the town became a natural trading place.
However, the town is also believed to have gained more populace due to Farnham Castle. It was built to provide residence for the Bishop of Winchester during the 12th century. The Bishops also establishes Waverly Abbey in 1128, which was closed in 1536.
The cloth and wool in Farnham became the reason for the town’s prosperity. Besides that, the town also became known for their wheat, hops, flour and green pots that were all made locally. Even though this gave the town’s population a boost, the size was still tiny compared to today’s standards.
Modern Farnham
By the 19th century, Farnham’s population grew rapidly and had risen to more than 14,000. This century was the turning point for Farnham as modern inventions made their way in. By the end of the century, Farnham gained the railway, gaslight, electricity and an Urban Council.
Most of the Georgian architecture survived and was incorporated with modern features during the 20th century. Museums, art centres, park and restaurants made way to the town’s centre. Along with that, population double as commuters to London started moving to Farnham.

Today, the town has a population of more than 39,000 and is a point of interest for both locals and tourists. While the historic relics are on display for their beauty, other locations have also popped up.
